Feeling wishywashy about your dance ability? If you dance at all you are among the top .00000something percentile relative to the 6.7 Billion people on the planet! YOU ARE GREAT!See if you can relate to this sequence Stage One Interested --not sure you can do it but really want to. Think everyone is great and amazed that we can actually “get” it. Stage Two Excited --Making noticeable progress and kind of excited to dance and learn more. Stage Three WEEEEEE! – Graduate from your first level and dance with a better dancer and everything just works! You are a dancer! Stage Four Awareness – You start watching more dancers and you see more details of what they can do and you … can’t. Stage Five Comparison – You begin comparing yourself to others and how much you get asked or how much YOU DON’T. You notice the struggles and that someone else moved up a level before you. Someone comments on how good someone (that started when you did) is doing and you “automatically” assume that means that you aren’t doing THAT well. Stage Six Stereotype – You begin to only compare yourself above your level and look at what you are on the bottom of --instead of looking at the big and complete picture – see diagram
Cut yourself some slack – you are learning and dancing and doing what many “want to do” but don’t. When someone out in some social setting comes up and asks if you are a “PRO” or a teacher or pays you some high compliment – don’t degrade yourself – you really are a PRO in their eyes and relative to the population – you stand pretty high in the ranks! It doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t also pay attention to what there is to learn and improve for the sake of yourself and your partners but you are a member of an elite club – THOSE THAT DANCE!
